Adobe Acrobat Reader (For Windows)

Talk about Adobe Acrobat PDF reader (Windows only). Acrobat is the de facto standard used to create PDF files, present multiple documents in a PDF Portfolio, and even add multimedia. All in a single file.

Is there a way to create a PDF such that the user sees a handwritten manuscript but is able to do text searches based on a manually typed transcription of the handwritten material? Also, if this is possible, can one choose to display either the handwritten pages or the typed pages? Thanks for your help.

Sure, it's perfectly doable.

The easiest way to do this is to use a program, such as Adobe InDesign, that supports the creation of "layered PDFs". This enables the presense of multiple layers of content - in your case, one layer is the handwritten material and the other is the typewritten one. The user could easily choose to view one or the other - but searchability would work either way.

Yes. Simply superimpose regular text on the image of the handwritten
text using the TouchUp Text Tool, then make the added text "invisible"
by choosing the color "none" or selecting "no color."

But for more than a brief paragraph, that seems more trouble than it's
worth.
